New podcast who dis? Don’t worry, I know it’s you and you’ve come by at the right time as I’m talking about how many steps a day should you take? You might be surprised how few steps you are actually taking and the health problems that are coming from it.
As a society, we don’t really need to be that fit to get by anymore and you only need take minimal steps as we are taken everywhere by transportation, elevators, escalators etc.
Today I want to talk about the recommended amount, why that is and the issues that happen from staying off our feet too much. This podcast features a guest appearance by New Kids On The Block.
Fun Fact: Jennifer Lopez was a backup dancer for New Kids On The Block before she became JLo and eventually would release “Jenny from the BLOCK”. See how things come full circle? Nature is miraculous sometimes. Also, in 1991 they made more money than Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince and their original name was going to be “Nynuk”. I thought that was a noise made by the Three Stooges..
O.K, step right up and listen to the podcast!

That’s the gist of the show but In case you aren’t able to listen at the moment, I’ll expand a bit on some of the key points so you’re not left with nothing if you’ve come by here!
What Happens When You Sit For Too Long
It actually does quite a lot, some say that sitting is the new smoking as far as how damaging it can be to your health. I don’t think I’d go that far as smoking is pretty damn bad. As far as sitting though you’re looking at a lot of potential problems. The first would be that mineral bone density goes way down. Your bones need to feel some pressure and weight to basically feel activated. When you constantly sit your bones get very soft leading to some big issues.
Combine this with the excess weight from not being active and you increase the problem. Excessive sitting decreases an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase or LPL. LPL can help burn fat and when you sit for two hours or longer you basically turn it off. So now you have a body that has excess weight on bones that are not as strong as they used to be. You can guess what that can lead to..
I go into a lot more detail on the other health issues caused by not being active in the show but this gives you some detail on one of the easiest problems that can develop.
How Do You Start Adding In Steps Each Day?
First off, you need to know how many steps you’re taking a day. This is pretty easy in this day in age with tracking technology like a phone or Fitbit but if you’re old school like me you can find step counters in a lot of places like running and sports stores. Here’s a link for a pretty cheap digital one on Amazon.
If you find yourself only taking half the amount of steps each day doubling it overnight is not only going to be too overwhelming but not practical. Instead what you want to do is add in an extra 500 steps a day each day for the whole week. The next week add another 500 on top of that over the course of the week and so on until you hit that ideal number.
Some easy ways to add in extra steps?
- Park farther away from the entrance at work or when you go shopping
- Taking the stairs in a no brainer but really helps
- Take a walk on your lunch break
Even just an extra walk after dinner. The average person has a stride length of 2.5 feet long so going for just a one-mile walk will rack you up 2000 steps. Maybe more if you’re chased by a rabid skunk.
Step By Step Day By Day, A Fresh Start Over A Different Hand To Play
Sounds like good advice doesn’t it? Well, it’s part of the theme song from the Step By Step TV show. Remember that one with Patrick Duffy and Suzanne Summers? It actually ran for seven seasons if you can believe that even though it was pretty much a Brady Bunch ripoff.
So that’s a bunch of good info on how many steps a day should you take. It’s pretty simple really if you want to be as healthy as possible you want to spend at least 50% of your waking hours somehow on your feet. Try not to go 30 minutes without getting up and definitely don’t let yourself go more than 2 hours without some form of activity.
